About the Role

The Senior Financial Crime Investigator role at Monzo is a critical component of the company's defense strategy against complex economic crime. As a member of the Senior Financial Crime Business Banking Investigator team, you will play a key role in safeguarding Monzo's ecosystem and customers against sophisticated fraud and money laundering. The team operates within a specialized, risk-focused 'Pillar,' building deep subject matter expertise to ensure financial integrity across the entire customer lifecycle.

The Senior Financial Crime Business Banking Investigator team is responsible for conducting rigorous onboarding and ongoing compliance checks, unraveling complex financial crime typologies, and directly mitigating risk through thorough investigation, reporting, and account closures. As a senior investigator, you will take ownership of the most complex FinCrime Business Banking tasks, including Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) for high-risk businesses and multi-jurisdictional money muling investigations.

The team's work has a direct impact on Monzo's customers and the broader financial ecosystem. By identifying and preventing financial crime, the team helps to protect Monzo's reputation and maintain the trust of its customers. The role requires a deep understanding of financial crime trends, regulations, and typologies, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with other teams to share emerging trends and ensure that operational guidance is continuously updated and effectively embedded across the domain.

What You Will Do

  • Conduct complex investigations into financial crime, including money laundering and fraud
  • Take ownership of Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) for high-risk businesses
  • Unravel complex financial crime typologies and identify emerging trends
  • Write, review, and submit high-quality Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to the National Crime Agency (NCA)
  • Maintain a regular schedule of core investigative tasks to sustain competency levels and support Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Actively coach investigators on complex financial crime typologies, best practice, and performance improvement
  • Work closely with Operations Analysts to share emerging trends and ensure that operational guidance is continuously updated and effectively embedded across the domain
  • Collaborate with other teams to identify and mitigate risk
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of financial crime trends, regulations, and typologies
  • Stay up-to-date with changing regulations and industry developments
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge

What We Are Looking For

  • Significant experience conducting end-to-end business due diligence (KYB/EDD) and complex investigations within a regulated financial setting
  • Deep KYB and AML expertise, with a strong grasp of UK and international financial crime trends affecting business accounts and the UK SAR regime
  • Proven ability to leverage open-source intelligence and analysis to thoroughly corroborate customer profiles and transactional activity
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and analyze complex financial crime trends
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to adapt positively to shifting priorities and new guidance
  • Strong communication and coaching skills, with the ability to mentor and train others
  • Leadership and improvement skills, with experience mentoring peers or escalating process improvements
  • Relevant qualification (such as ICA or ACAMS) or equivalent experience
