Job Description
About the Role
As a Senior Indirect Tax Compliance Analyst at Gitlab, you will play a critical role in ensuring the company meets its indirect tax obligations across the US, Canada, and selected non-US jurisdictions. You will be responsible for owning core indirect tax compliance work end-to-end, supporting cross-functional partners on tax questions tied to new transactions and product changes, and improving how the work gets done through stronger automation, controls, and system design.The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of indirect tax compliance principles and a proven track record of managing complex tax projects. You will be working closely with the Multinational Tax Manager and other stakeholders to drive process improvements and ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
What You Will Do
- Own end-to-end global indirect tax compliance, including nexus analysis, return preparation, filing, payment, and ongoing threshold monitoring
- Assess software as a service (SaaS) taxability rules and maintain current taxability guidance for transactions across relevant jurisdictions
- Oversee exemption certificate processes and tax engine configuration, including rate accuracy and transaction tax logic within Avalara
- Perform monthly accruals and quarterly reconciliations for indirect tax accounts and maintain supporting documentation for control readiness
- Collaborate with Sales, Billing, Legal, and Accounting on indirect tax matters related to customer structures, product launches, and new business activities
- Drive process improvements focused on automation, operational efficiency, and scalable controls, including AI-enabled enhancements to compliance workflows
- Maintain accurate tax determination frameworks and evolve key workflows in tools like Avalara, NetSuite, and Zuora
- Support the implementation of new tax laws and regulations, and ensure compliance with existing ones
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in indirect tax compliance, preferably in a SaaS environment
- Strong knowledge of US, Canadian, and international indirect tax laws and regulations
- Experience with tax software such as Avalara, NetSuite, and Zuora
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data sets and identify areas for improvement
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related field
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI-enabled tax compliance tools and workflows
- Knowledge of sales and use tax, value-added tax, and goods and services tax
- Certification in tax accounting, such as a CPA or CMA
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment
