About the Role

The Senior Legal Counsel position at Wikimedia is a critical component of the organization's legal team, providing in-house counsel to the Fundraising, Product, and Engineering teams. As a key advisor, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Wikimedia can innovate while protecting the privacy of its global community. This role requires a deep understanding of marketing, product, and tech law, as well as the ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes.

The Wikimedia Foundation is committed to creating a world where the sum total of human knowledge is available to everyone. As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for counseling the Foundation on a wide range of legal issues, from marketing and product development to tech policy and regulatory compliance. Your expertise will help shape the future of the organization and ensure that it remains a leader in the global movement for free knowledge.

The Senior Legal Counsel will report to the Associate General Counsel and will work closely with the Foundation's lawyers and public policy professionals to address the impact of Generative AI and create a global legal ecosystem in which free knowledge can thrive.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze current and forthcoming regulations related to marketing, customization, and other fundraising initiatives to support Advancement, Product, and Technology teams on marketing and mobile app development
  • Collaborate with the Foundation's lawyers and public policy professionals to address the impact of Generative AI and create a global legal ecosystem in which free knowledge can thrive
  • Identify and execute opportunities to advance the Wikimedia mission within a complex, shifting technological and legal landscape
  • Support the Product and Engineering teams in developing a data governance model that allows for novel features while maintaining high privacy standards
  • Provide holistic in-house legal guidance to the Fundraising, Product, and Engineering teams, ensuring the Foundation can innovate while protecting the privacy of its global community
  • Counsel on the development of the Wikimedia technical platform, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Work closely with the Foundation's public policy team to advance the organization's mission and values
  • Develop and implement effective legal strategies to mitigate risk and ensure compliance
  • Collaborate with external counsel and experts as needed to provide comprehensive legal support

What We Are Looking For

  • J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school or equivalent foreign degree, preferably paired with significant U.S. legal experience
  • Experience with product, privacy, marketing, and other internet law issues, advising a user-facing digital technology or internet company (e.g., as in-house counsel), preferably with global reach
  • 5-7 years of experience with legal review of go-to-market, fundraising, technical products, or online services
  • Significant experience working with engineering colleagues as a counselor and advisor to achieve organizational goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail, with full fluency in written and spoken English
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment and thrive in a highly transparent and collaborative setting

Nice to Have

  • Experience with marketing, fundraising, and campaign customization, and online communities
  • A degree or work experience in marketing, campaign management, computer science, engineering, or a related field
  • Familiarity with open-source movement and the Wikimedia mission
  • Experience working with global teams and navigating complex international regulatory environments
