About the Role

The Senior Manager, Machine Learning position at Twilio is a critical role that involves leading the development of advanced machine learning models and robust data pipelines to enable fast and accurate risk predictions and decisions. As a key member of the Traffic Intelligence organization, you will be responsible for establishing trusted communications and ensuring that every interaction is safe, wanted, and legal. This role requires a blend of technical depth in distributed systems and a strategic mindset to partner with Product and Engineering leaders to execute an AI/ML roadmap.

The Traffic Intelligence organization is at the forefront of Twilio's efforts to prevent fraud and ensure compliance, and as such, this role will involve working closely with various stakeholders, including the Fraud and Compliance Operations team and the Data Analytics team. You will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of talented Machine Learning and Data Engineers, and for driving the technical direction of the team.

What You Will Do

  • Manage and mentor a team of Machine Learning and Data Engineers to develop and implement AI/ML solutions
  • Partner with Product Managers and Architects to distill customer needs into actionable technical requirements and long-term roadmaps
  • Ensure best engineering practices and oversee end-to-end execution of large-scale ML solutions with operational excellence
  • Work with data platform teams to build robust, scalable batch and real-time data pipelines
  • Collaborate with the Fraud and Compliance Operations team and the Data Analytics team to identify and understand the ever-changing landscape of fraud vectors
  • Work with other product and development teams to ensure that Twilio's new and existing products incorporate anti-fraud efforts
  • Advocate for agile processes, continuous integration (CI/CD), automated testing, and sophisticated model monitoring to minimize 'toil'
  • Institute and maintain a rotating on-call incident escalation and response process for the team
  • Manage highly critical risk platform tools in the cloud
  • Own reliability for the team's services and participate in an on-call rotation
  • Adapt to prioritizing multiple issues in a high-pressure environment

What We Are Looking For

  • 8+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on machine learning and data engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in managing and mentoring a team of engineers
  • Strong technical expertise in distributed systems, machine learning, and data pipelining
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and continuous integration (CI/CD)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Strong understanding of the importance of trust and safety in communications
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies and highly scalable systems
  • Familiarity with Excel and other data analysis tools

Nice to Have

  • Experience with natural language processing and computer vision
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker
  • Experience with cloud-based machine learning platforms such as AWS SageMaker or Google Cloud AI Platform
  • Certification in machine learning or a related field
