Job Description

About the Role

The Senior Quality Engineer role at LawnStarter represents a unique opportunity for a skilled professional to make a significant impact on the company's quality process. As part of the engineering team, this position entails working closely with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate risks early on, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services to customers. Given the company's recent rebuild of its platform, including a new customer app, Pro onboarding, and job distribution engine, the foundation for growth is solid. However, the challenge lies in maintaining and improving quality as the company expands into new service verticals and adopts dynamic pricing and AI-powered features.

The engineering team at LawnStarter utilizes a stack that includes PHP (Laravel) and React/React Native, with Cypress as the primary test framework. The incorporation of Claude Code into the engineering workflow signifies the company's commitment to innovative solutions. The Senior Quality Engineer will be instrumental in owning the automation coverage, shaping the bug process, and partnering with various teams to catch problems before they affect customers.

  • Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role embeds the engineer across the engineering organization, requiring a high level of collaboration and strategic thinking.
  • The position demands a hands-on approach, focusing on raising the quality ceiling for the entire team, while also being strategic in identifying and solving complex problems.

What You Will Do

  • Design and grow the company's E2E and integration test suite using Cypress, setting the strategy and prioritizing coverage gaps.
  • Own the full lifecycle of the bug process, from triage to production fix, ensuring that stakeholders are informed and nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Collaborate with PMs, Designers, and the Data team to review requirements, raise risks early, and define what 'done' means in terms of quality and functionality.
  • Identify weaknesses in the software delivery process and propose practical solutions, not just document them.
  • Conduct exploratory testing on new features and existing flows across devices and platforms, identifying issues that automation might miss.
  • Lead the effort to keep automation coverage sharp as the product evolves, exploring new ideas and smarter ways to automate different aspects of the application.
  • Explore the use of AI tools to improve quality operations, increasing output quality and reducing repetitive work.

What We Are Looking For

  • A strong background in quality engineering, with a focus on automation and process improvement.
  • Experience with Cypress or similar test frameworks, and the ability to design and implement comprehensive test suites.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple teams.
  • Knowledge of PHP (Laravel) and React/React Native, or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with AI-powered tools or interest in exploring their application in quality engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a fast-paced, remote environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and propose effective solutions.
  • Certification in software testing or a related field is a plus.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Claude Code or similar engineering workflow tools.
  • Knowledge of dynamic pricing and AI-powered features, or experience working in a company that has implemented such technologies.
  • background in data analysis or experience working closely with data teams.
  • Fluency in Portuguese, given the role's location in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary within the range of $45k - $65k.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development in a rapidly expanding company.
  • Flexible, remote work environment, allowing for a healthy work-life balance.
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies and tools, including AI-powered solutions.
  • Comprehensive health insurance and retirement plans.
  • Generous PTO policy and paid holidays.
  • Remote stipend to support home office setup and ongoing work needs.

How to Stand Out

  • Ensure your portfolio showcases your experience in automation and process improvement, highlighting specific tools and technologies used.
  • Be prepared to discuss your approach to exploratory testing and how you stay current with the latest trends in quality engineering.
  • Familiarize yourself with LawnStarter's technology stack and be ready to talk about how you can contribute to its growth and improvement.
  • Consider highlighting any experience with AI-powered tools or your interest in exploring their application in quality operations.
  • In your application, emphasize your ability to work collaboratively in a remote environment and your experience with cross-functional teams.
  • Prepare questions about the company's approach to quality, its vision for expansion into new service verticals, and how the Senior Quality Engineer role contributes to these goals.
