Job Description

About the Role

The Senior Quality Engineer position at LawnStarter is a unique opportunity to lead the charge in ensuring the highest quality of the company's on-demand marketplace and outdoor services. As a key member of the engineering team, this role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate risks early, propose better solutions, and own the automation coverage strategy. The successful candidate will report to the Engineering Manager and be embedded across the engineering organization, helping to raise the quality ceiling for the entire team.

LawnStarter has been rebuilding its platform from the ground up over the last two years, resulting in a solid foundation of new customer apps, Pro onboarding, job distribution engines, and data infrastructure. The company is now expanding into new service verticals, implementing dynamic pricing, and scaling AI-powered features. In this context, the role of the Senior Quality Engineer is crucial in ensuring that quality keeps pace with this growth.

What You Will Do

  • Design and grow the company's end-to-end (E2E) and integration test suite using Cypress, setting the strategy and prioritizing coverage gaps.
  • Own the full lifecycle of bug processes, from triage to production fix, ensuring that stakeholders are informed and that issues are resolved efficiently.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and the Data team to review requirements, raise potential risks, and define what constitutes 'done' for each feature or project.
  • Identify weaknesses in the software delivery process and propose practical solutions to improve it.
  • Conduct exploratory testing of new features and existing flows across different devices and platforms to catch issues that automation might miss.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends and tools in quality engineering, exploring the use of AI to enhance quality operations and improve test coverage.
  • Partner with the engineering team to ensure that new features are shipped with automated tests as a baseline, evolving coverage strategies as the product grows.
  • Work on improving the quality process, aiming to implement at least one significant improvement within the first year.

What We Are Looking For

  • At least 4 years of experience in software quality engineering, preferably in a similar on-demand marketplace or tech environment.
  • Strong background in automated testing, particularly with Cypress, and experience in designing and implementing E2E and integration tests.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and propose effective solutions.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product, and design, to ensure quality is considered at every stage of the development process.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies, including Agile, and experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Familiarity with PHP (Laravel) and React/React Native, as well as experience with Claude Code as part of the engineering workflow.
  • Ability to work in a remote setting, with excellent communication and collaboration skills to ensure seamless integration with the distributed team.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI-powered testing tools and methodologies, and a keen interest in integrating AI into quality operations.
  • Knowledge of dynamic pricing mechanisms and how they impact quality assurance processes.
  • Certification in software testing or quality engineering, demonstrating a commitment to professional development in the field.
  • Experience with other test frameworks and tools beyond Cypress, showcasing adaptability and a broad skill set.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary in the range of $45,000 to $65,000, depending on experience.
  • Opportunity to work with a leading on-demand marketplace that is expanding its services, offering a challenging and dynamic work environment.
  • Collaborative and supportive team culture, with a strong emphasis on remote work flexibility.
  • Professional development opportunities, including training, certifications, and conference attendance to stay updated with industry trends.
  • Access to the latest tools and technologies, including AI-powered testing solutions, to enhance quality operations.
  • Comprehensive health benefits and a generous PTO policy to ensure work-life balance.
  • Remote stipend to support home office setup and productivity.

How to Stand Out

  • Focus on showcasing your automated testing skills, particularly with Cypress, and be ready to discuss your strategy for expanding test coverage in a rapidly growing product.
  • Highlight your experience working with cross-functional teams, including examples of how you've collaborated with product, design, and engineering teams to ensure quality is integrated into every stage of development.
  • Prepare to discuss your understanding of AI-powered testing tools and how you see them enhancing quality operations in the future, even if you don't have direct experience with these technologies.
  • Be prepared to walk through your process for exploratory testing, including how you identify areas to focus on and what tools you use to conduct these tests.
  • Emphasize your ability to work independently in a remote setting, highlighting your communication skills, self-motivation, and ability to stay connected with distributed teams.
  • Show a keen interest in the company's mission and services, and be ready to discuss how your skills and experience align with LawnStarter's goals and expansion plans.
  • Don't hesitate to ask about the company culture and team dynamics during the interview, as fitting in with the team and understanding the work environment is crucial for success in a remote role.
