Job Description

About the Role

The Future of Computing Research team at Openai is dedicated to developing novel methods and models that support the company's mission of advancing towards general-purpose artificial intelligence (AGI) that benefits humanity. As a Senior Research Engineer/Scientist, you will be part of an innovative team that combines the expertise of the world's best machine learning researchers with exceptional design talent. Your primary focus will be on enhancing the capabilities of on-device transformer models, driving innovation in how these models can perform optimally on future devices.

Working in a hybrid model, with four days a week spent in the office, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to push the frontier of what is possible with multimodal models. This role is not just about advancing the state-of-the-art in AI research; it's also about translating those advancements into tangible, real-world applications that can transform how humans interact with technology.

Given the cutting-edge nature of this role, it's essential to be in an environment that encourages open collaboration and the sharing of ideas. Openai's San Francisco office serves as a hub for these interactions, providing a unique opportunity for talented professionals to come together and shape the future of computing.

What You Will Do

  • Train and evaluate state-of-the-art multimodal models along axes that are crucial for the future of devices.
  • Develop novel architectures that can improve model performance, especially in scenarios where scaling the models themselves is not feasible.
  • Collaborate with GPU kernel engineers to optimize model performance, though direct CUDA experience is not required.
  • Conduct rigorous scientific experiments to ensure confidence in the research findings and the capabilities developed.
  • Work closely with the design team to integrate model outputs into user-centric applications, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  • Analyze existing models and propose enhancements to increase their efficiency and relevance to real-world problems.
  • Participate in the development of best practices for model training, evaluation, and deployment in resource-constrained environments.
  • Engage with the broader research community through publications and presentations, furthering Openai's mission and reputation.
  • Contribute to the development of the team's research agenda, ensuring alignment with the company's overall goals and objectives.

What We Are Looking For

  • A research background related to developing on-device transformer models, with a strong publication record in relevant conferences and journals.
  • Experience in training and evaluating large-scale machine learning models, particularly in multimodal settings.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, with Python being a plus, and experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Strong understanding of performance optimization techniques, especially in the context of GPU-accelerated computing.
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment, with the ability to communicate complex technical ideas effectively.
  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, with a focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a closely related area.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience working on projects involving natural language processing, computer vision, or other areas of multimodal learning.
  • Knowledge of containerization tools like Docker and experience with cloud platforms for large-scale model training.
  • Participation in open-source projects or personal endeavors that demonstrate your passion for AI research and development.
  • Experience in mentoring junior researchers or engineers, contributing to a culture of knowledge sharing and growth.

Benefits and Perks

  • The opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI research with a talented team of researchers and engineers.
  • A competitive compensation package, including salary, equity, and benefits, tailored to attract and retain top talent.
  • A generous parental leave policy, ensuring that our employees can care for their loved ones without worrying about their job security.
  • Comprehensive health insurance, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, to support the well-being of our team members and their families.
  • Access to mental health resources and employee assistance programs, recognizing the importance of mental wellness in today's fast-paced work environment.
  • A remote stipend to support your home office setup, acknowledging the importance of a comfortable and productive work environment, regardless of location.

How to Stand Out

  • Highlight your research background: Emphasize your experience in developing on-device transformer models and your publication record in top-tier conferences and journals.
  • Showcase your coding skills: Share examples of your proficiency in Python, TensorFlow, or PyTorch, and explain how you've applied these skills in previous projects.
