About the Role

The Senior Software Engineer - Risk (AI & Automation) role at Mercury is a unique opportunity to join a team of innovators who are shaping the future of banking. As a senior software engineer, you will be responsible for driving the development of AI-powered risk systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and leading technical projects from concept to production. You will be working closely with the Risk Engineering team to design and implement agentic AI systems that can reason about risk, investigate, decide, escalate, and learn. The goal is to create a seamless and efficient experience for founders and businesses, while ensuring the highest level of security and compliance.

The Risk Engineering team is a critical component of Mercury's operations, and as a senior software engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the architecture and implementation of AI-powered risk systems. You will be working with a talented team of engineers, product managers, and designers to translate evolving regulatory and operational needs into elegant and resilient software.

What You Will Do

  • Drive AI product development in risk, from application approvals to ongoing and enhanced due diligence
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Risk Strategy, Compliance, and Operations to translate evolving regulatory and operational needs into software
  • Lead technical projects from concept to production, defining solutions, analyzing tradeoffs, making critical decisions, and delivering software that works today and is sustainable for tomorrow
  • Write clear, testable, and maintainable code, establishing patterns and best practices that your team can follow
  • Drive quality and scalability, designing extensible platform systems that create leverage, making balanced decisions on tech debt, planning careful rollouts, and owning the quality of your work through post-launch monitoring
  • Model a strong culture of operational excellence, holding a high bar for observability, reliability, and incident response
  • Approach problems with a product mindset, caring as much about the business impact of what you build as the technical design
  • Mentor and elevate the team, providing guidance and support to help others grow and develop their skills
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, applying that knowledge to improve Mercury's risk systems and stay ahead of the competition
  • Collaborate with the data science team to integrate machine learning models into the risk workflow
  • Work closely with the product team to define and prioritize product requirements
  • Participate in code reviews and ensure that the codebase is maintainable and follows best practices

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on AI and automation
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and principles
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies such as AWS or Google Cloud
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and version control systems such as Git
  • Strong understanding of security and compliance principles, with experience in implementing security measures in software development
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
