About the Role
The Senior Staff Engineer position at Airbnb focuses on the critical areas of communication and connectivity, aiming to enhance the guest-host experience through robust backend architecture and the application of advanced AI technologies. This role is pivotal in driving technical direction and strategy across cross-functional teams, including design, product marketing, and data science. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, contributing code while also leading and mentoring other engineers to achieve high-quality outcomes.As part of the Communication and Connectivity team, the senior staff engineer will work closely with various disciplines, including web, native, backend, data, and machine learning engineers, to envision and build scalable foundations for guest-host interactions and partner integrations. The team's efforts are central to Airbnb's mission, as they enable the platform to offer unique stays and experiences, fostering more authentic connections between guests and hosts worldwide.
What You Will Do
- Partner closely with senior leaders across the technical organization to drive technical direction and strategy.
- Contribute hands-on to the development of scalable backend architectures and AI-enhanced features.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to envision and build a unique, delightful, extensible guest-host communication experience.
- Envision and build a scalable foundation for reaching out to hosts in need through notifications.
- Explore ways to uplift the partner integration platform leveraging advanced AI technology.
- Perform design and code reviews and advise/mentor other engineers at Airbnb.
- Understand how key technical decisions will drive business outcomes and deliver frameworks and platforms that improve delivery with high-quality to those outcomes.
- Lead project teams, set technical direction, and work cross-functionally with Product and Data Science teams.
- Develop and maintain technical roadmaps and architectural visions for the Communication and Connectivity team.
What We Are Looking For
- 12+ years of relevant experience in a fast-paced, high-growth tech environment.
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
- Experience building, leading, and architecting full-stack products and systems at an enterprise scale with significant impact.
- Strong experience in applying modern artificial intelligence technologies to products and development cycles.
- Technical leadership: hands-on experience leading project teams, setting technical direction and strategy, and working cross-functionally with Product and Data Science teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with examples of working across teams and organizations on technical initiatives.
- Experience with backend technologies and AI frameworks.
Nice to Have
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud.
- Knowledge of containerization using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
