About the Role
As a Senior Substation Protection and Controls Engineer at Leidos, you will play a critical role in designing and delivering substation protection and control projects. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of high-voltage systems, and you will have the opportunity to work on complex projects that impact the modern grid. You will be part of a collaborative team of engineers, designers, and CAD technicians, working together to produce high-quality designs that meet client requirements.The role of a substation protection and controls engineer is multifaceted, requiring a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, as well as the ability to apply advanced digital logic and AC/DC circuit expertise. You will be responsible for leading and supporting the delivery of substation protection and control design projects, ensuring technical excellence and on-time performance. Your work will involve creating and refining relay one-line diagrams, developing detailed AC schematics, and producing DC control and protection schematics.
What You Will Do
- Lead and support the delivery of substation protection and control design projects
- Create and refine relay one-line diagrams that define protection zones and system topology
- Develop detailed AC schematics that capture current, voltage, and protection device relationships
- Produce DC control and protection schematics that ensure safe and reliable operation of substation equipment
- Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts that support efficient construction and long-term maintainability
- Build accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements
- Perform rigorous QC checks on wiring and schematic designs to ensure accuracy, safety, and constructability
- Contribute from early scoping through final design, implementation, and energization support
- Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning activities
- Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements to ensure safe and compliant designs
- Interpret and implement utility-specific standards across all design deliverables
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field
- 8+ years of experience in substation protection and control design
- Proven ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and clients
- Ability to meet deadlines and stay organized in fast-paced or high-pressure situations
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Experience with Excel and other design software
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and practices
- Ability to apply advanced digital logic and AC/DC circuit expertise
- Experience with substation protection and control systems
Nice to Have
- Experience with project management principles and practices
- Knowledge of utility-specific standards and regulations
- Familiarity with CAD software and design tools
- Experience with DC control and protection schematics
- Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE)
