About the Role
The Senior Underwriting Officer role at Liberty Mutual is a critical position that entails working with the largest and most complex construction risks to deliver primary casualty and wrap-up programs. This role will focus on the company's Large Construction portfolio, serving many of the largest contractors in the U.S. The successful candidate will work closely with the leadership team to deliver technical expertise, serve as a point of contact for frontline underwriting teams, and develop and implement portfolio strategies to maintain and improve performance.As a key member of the underwriting team, the Senior Underwriting Officer will interact independently with field underwriters and directly with UW managers on all mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation items. The role requires ensuring continuity and alignment between Primary Casualty and Excess placements, supporting leadership on transactions, and serving as a trusted advisor on exposure, coverage analysis, and key pricing/financial elements.
The Senior Underwriting Officer will also be responsible for monitoring frameworks for underwriting decisions and recommending improvements as needed. This will involve evaluating portfolio performance regularly in Large Construction, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify drivers of performance, risks, and opportunities, and driving technical excellence across the portfolio.
What You Will Do
- Provide expert technical underwriting assistance and formal referral approval for multiple lines of business, including auto, general liability, workers' compensation, and lead/excess
- Interact independently with field underwriters and directly with UW managers on all mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation items
- Ensure continuity and alignment between Primary Casualty and Excess placements
- Support leadership on transactions and serve as a trusted advisor on exposure, coverage analysis, and key pricing/financial elements
- Monitor frameworks for underwriting decisions and recommend improvements as needed
- Evaluate portfolio performance regularly in Large Construction, identifying drivers of performance, risks, and opportunities
- Drive technical excellence across Large Construction, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify and resolve issues
- Work with underwriting leaders to identify product and service enhancements and underwriter capability development opportunities
- Coordinate improvements and resources, modeling effective collaboration within and across teams, stakeholders, and partners
- Develop and implement portfolio strategies to maintain and improve performance
- Serve as a point of contact for frontline underwriting teams on all questions, key decisions, or referrals
What We Are Looking For
- Expert-level knowledge of all aspects of coverage forms, exclusions, and exposure
- Advanced knowledge of and experience operating within several different industry segments, with experience in Construction programs being key
- Insurance operations, claims, finance, and actuarial concepts knowledge
- Regulatory environment, loss control/risk engineering, reinsurance, account management, and product development understanding
- Superior communication skills, including written, verbal, presentation, and listening
- Skilled collaborator who is willing to assess all sides of an issue, bring in others with expertise, and independently execute and advance the collaboration model
- Approachability, tact, coaching/development, analyzing and problem-solving skills
- Relationship and service-driven approach, with a clear solutions orientation and commitment to achieving segment operational and financial objectives
- Negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to consistently and positively influence others both internally and externally
- 10 or more years of relevant experience, including underwriting, claims, reinsurance, coaching/developing others, and working with brokers/agents
- Current knowledge of market trends and developments
