Job Description
About the Role
The Software Engineer role at IOHK is a unique opportunity to work on the Midnight Indexer, a critical component of the company's blockchain technology. As a member of the team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and operating the Indexer's components, ensuring a modular and maintainable architecture. The Indexer is a Rust service that streams blockchain data from Midnight nodes to wallets and end-user applications through a high-performance GraphQL API. Your primary focus will be on the Indexer, but you will also have the opportunity to contribute to adjacent components, such as the Node and the Ledger.The role requires a strong understanding of Rust, blockchain technology, and data systems. You will be working closely with the node, ledger, wallet, and security teams, contributing to the development of the platform and ensuring the highest level of quality and reliability. What You Will Do
- Design, build, and operate the Indexer's components in Rust, including the chain indexer, wallet indexer, and SPO indexer
- Build and maintain the data pipeline that fetches blocks and transactions from the Midnight node via subxt
- Design efficient schemas and queries across PostgreSQL and SQLite, ensuring healthy latency and throughput
- Evolve the GraphQL API, including queries, mutations, and real-time subscriptions over WebSockets
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, treating reliability and correctness as first-class concerns
- Own operational quality for the service, including observability, containerized deployment, and incident response
- Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions, collaborating closely with other teams
- Keep current with developments in Rust and blockchain technology, applying them to improve the platform
- Contribute to the development of adjacent components, such as the Node and the Ledger
- Collaborate with the security team to ensure the highest level of security and privacy
What We Are Looking For
- At least 3 years of experience in software development, with at least 2 years in the Rust programming language
- Strong, idiomatic Rust skills, including async/await and concurrency
- Backend/data-systems experience, including building and operating high-performance services or data pipelines
- Practical experience with PostgreSQL and/or SQLite, including schema design and query optimization
- API design experience, including designing and evolving service APIs
- Computer-science fundamentals, including sound knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and concurrency
- Engineering discipline, including rigorous testing, code review, and clear technical communication
- Remote collaboration experience, including effective working asynchronously across time zones
Nice to Have
- Experience with Substrate/Polkadot ecosystem, including subxt and pallets
- Familiarity with blockchain core concepts, including consensus mechanisms and cryptography
- Interest in applied cryptography or zero-knowledge proofs
- Experience with WASM, including compiling Rust to WebAssembly
- Knowledge of Cardano/partner chains, including the context of Midnight as a Cardano partner chain
