About the Role
The Payments Team at Openai is responsible for developing and maintaining the payment infrastructure that supports the company's commercial experiences. As a Software Engineer on this team, you will play a crucial role in designing and building core payment systems, ensuring seamless user experiences, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive business growth.The Payments Team works closely with various stakeholders, including Finance, Legal, Growth, and Product teams, to ensure that payment systems meet business requirements and scale with the company's growth. Your expertise in payments and financial systems will be essential in driving the development of scalable and reliable payment solutions.
What You Will Do
- Architect, implement, and scale core payment infrastructure to support Openai's commercial experiences
- Design and build robust and extensible financial primitives to enable rapid iteration and hyper-growth
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to translate business requirements into clean, scalable technical systems
- Develop and maintain payment processing systems, including storing cardholder data, pricing, and online commerce
- Ensure the reliability, observability, and auditability of money movement at Openai
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable solutions and support evolving commercial goals
- Demonstrate high levels of ownership to get changes shipped in the highly-regulated domain of payments
- Create a seamless user experience for checkout around the world
- Improve the reliability, observability, and auditability of payment systems
- Develop and maintain technical documentation for payment systems
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering, ideally with a focus on payments or financial systems at scale
- Experience with payment processors, such as Stripe, Adyen, or Braintree
- Strong product mindset and a desire to deeply understand product needs and design for long-term flexibility
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build consensus among stakeholders
- Experience working in high-growth, ambiguous environments, and ability to balance fast execution with technical rigor and system reliability
- Familiarity with GTM and Excel skills
- Experience with cloud-based payment systems and APIs
Nice to Have
- Experience with machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements for payments and financial systems
