About the Role

The Software Engineering Manager at Affirm is a critical leadership position, responsible for overseeing the development and operation of the company's platform engineering systems. This role entails leading a team of engineers to build and maintain the pipelines and services that provide accurate and timely credit reporting data to external bureaus and partners. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of data pipeline architecture, data quality, and reliability controls, as well as the ability to drive technical direction and execution strategy across multiple stakeholders. As a key member of the engineering team, the Software Engineering Manager will work closely with product managers, compliance and legal teams, and analytics teams to ensure that the platform engineering systems meet the company's business objectives. This role requires exceptional technical rigor, with the ability to dive deep into pipeline architecture, data quality, and performance bottlenecks, and to use that depth to uplevel engineering excellence through strong design reviews, pragmatic standards, and mentorship. The Software Engineering Manager will also be responsible for managing and growing a team of engineers, partnering closely with product, compliance, and legal teams to drive delivery through clear technical decision-making and operational discipline.

What You Will Do

  • Manage and grow a team of engineers, with a focus on building a high-performing team culture
  • Develop a deep understanding of the system design of the ETL pipelines and the dependencies on upstream data sources
  • Own key outcomes and metrics, such as accuracy, timeliness, completeness, and incident rates, and lead multi-quarter cross-org initiatives to improve pipeline quality and reliability
  • Partner closely with product managers to design and build best-in-class systems and processes for collections
  • Partner with a diverse set of engineering teams who build solutions throughout the entire lifecycle of a loan repayment at Affirm
  • Own availability, reliability, and performance of your team's systems
  • Build relationships and engage with senior management in the organization
  • Drive technical direction and execution strategy across multiple stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the company's business objectives and how they impact the platform engineering systems

What We Are Looking For

  • 7+ years of proven experience as a software engineer, with 2+ years as an engineering manager
  • Drive to change consumer financial services for the better
  • Prior experience growing and managing high-performing engineering teams
  • Fluency in backend system design
  • Prior experience architecting, building, launching, and maintaining consumer-scale products
  • Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills
  • Knowledge of basic loan lifecycle and credit reporting is a plus
  • Experience with data pipeline architecture and data quality
  • Strong understanding of reliability controls and performance bottlenecks

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud-based technologies, such as AWS or Google Cloud
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies, such as Scrum or Kanban
  • Experience with containerization, such as Docker
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and compliance regulations
