About the Role

The South East Asia Reporter position at Skift is a unique opportunity for a skilled journalist to cover the dynamic travel industry in South East Asia. As a key member of the Skift team, you will be responsible for reporting on the latest news, trends, and developments in the region, working closely with a global team of editors and journalists. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include researching and writing high-quality news stories, conducting interviews with industry leaders, and analyzing data to identify trends and patterns.

The travel industry in South East Asia is rapidly evolving, with new developments in airlines, resort development, online travel, tech, tourism policy, and M&A. As a South East Asia Reporter, you will have the opportunity to cover these stories and provide in-depth analysis to Skift's global audience. You will be working remotely, with the ability to set your own daily agenda and work independently, while also collaborating seamlessly with the global team.

What You Will Do

  • Report and write across a variety of formats, including breaking news, original reporting, sharp analysis, and deep-dive enterprise stories
  • Develop and break original stories by drawing on deep industry sources, regulatory filings, corporate disclosures, and your own relentless legwork
  • Travel to cover critical industry events, Skift's own global conferences, and participate in media appearances when opportunities arise
  • Communicate openly and share information regularly with colleagues, building strong, cohesive working relationships across the global, remote newsroom
  • Stay deeply read-in on global and regional travel news, keeping a pulse on Skift's coverage and the broader competitive landscape
  • Exercise astute and ethical journalistic judgment in your everyday reporting and source interactions
  • Utilize Excel to analyze data and identify trends
  • Collaborate with the editorial team to plan and execute special projects and investigations
  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts in the travel industry
  • Conduct interviews with industry leaders and experts
  • Write high-quality news stories and analysis pieces

What We Are Looking For

  • 2-3 years of experience in business reporting, with a focus on the travel industry
  • B2B or business publishing experience is highly preferred, though strong consumer media experience will be considered
  • Industry fluency: a solid working familiarity with the travel industries in South East Asia, ideally backed by an extensive network of contacts in the sector
  • Editorial excellence: exceptional writing and copy-editing skills, with a proven ability to tell compelling business stories
  • Technical proficiency: comfort working in WordPress, basic photo editing tools, Google Docs, and standard remote collaboration software
  • Agility and independence: the discipline to set your own agenda and thrive in a remote setting while remaining highly connected and enthusiastic about teamwork
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
