About the Role
The Sr Director I, Data Science role is a senior individual contributor and thought leader position within Liberty Mutual's US Retail Markets Data Science Excellence team. As a key member of the team, you will serve as a technical advisor, providing guidance on predictive analytic techniques, statistical diagnostics, and modeling initiatives. Your expertise will help elevate the technical rigor of the teams, ensuring that data science investments are aligned with strategic priorities and drive measurable business outcomes.The role requires a seasoned practitioner who thrives on breadth, with the ability to engage credibly across a wide range of modeling initiatives simultaneously. You will partner closely with front-line data science managers, modeling teams, and business stakeholders to ensure that AI work is grounded in sound methodology and aligned to strategic priorities.
The US Retail Markets Data Science Excellence team is a dynamic and innovative group, committed to driving business growth through data-driven insights. As a senior leader within the team, you will have the opportunity to mentor and develop junior data scientists, contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives, and help shape the company's data science strategy.
What You Will Do
- Serve as a senior technical reviewer across active modeling projects, identifying structural risks and providing actionable feedback
- Conduct focused reviews of model documentation, validation approaches, and monitoring frameworks
- Partner with front-line data science managers to assess opportunity areas and translate ambiguous business problems into well-scoped modeling applications
- Help business stakeholders understand what data science and AI can and cannot do in their domain, building shared frameworks for prioritizing investments
- Bridge the gap between technical execution and business strategy by framing model outputs in terms of operational levers, cost/benefit tradeoffs, and downstream claims or service workflows
- Mentor data scientists and senior modelers across USDS, providing technical expertise, business acumen, and systems thinking
- Act as a sounding board for data science leaders navigating build-vs-buy decisions, vendor evaluations, and model governance questions
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives, cross-BU technical forums, and capability-building efforts
- Demonstrate intellectual rigor and humility, showing what good technical judgment looks like in the face of ambiguity or organizational pressure
What We Are Looking For
- Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models
- Expert knowledge of predictive toolsets, including highly technical tools
- Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the aligned functional area and client group
- Ability to give effective training and presentations to all levels of the organization
- Interacts with senior executives, demonstrating the ability to anticipate areas of senior management concern, integrate different perspectives, and respond accordingly
- Strong business acumen, with the ability to translate complex data into business outcomes
- Experience with Excel and other data analysis tools
