About the Role

The Sr Manager, Software Engineering role at Tempus is a critical leadership position that requires a unique blend of technical expertise, strategic vision, and collaborative leadership skills. As the primary guardian of data reliability, this individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, traceability, and integrity of complex multi-modal datasets, spanning clinical records, genomics, and radiology. This role will also involve mentoring a high-performing engineering squad, fostering a culture of excellence in data quality and engineering best practices.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the healthcare industry and the role of technology in advancing precision medicine. What You Will Do

  • Lead and manage a small, agile team of software engineers, providing technical guidance and mentorship to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions.
  • Architect and implement comprehensive testing suites within DBT, ensuring the integrity and reliability of complex datasets.
  • Design and enforce data quality gates in the CI/CD and ETL pipeline, guaranteeing that only high-integrity data reaches production environments.
  • Perform exhaustive data profiling and deep-dive analyses using SQL and Python, evaluating completeness, identifying hidden patterns, and resolving structural inconsistencies.
  • Collaborate directly with Product Managers and other Team Leads to develop and prioritize the product backlog, identifying work estimates and refining complex requirements into actionable technical tasks.
  • Champion the use of AI productivity tools, such as Cursor, Claude, and GitHub Copilot, to streamline development, automate testing, and refactor legacy data pipelines efficiently.
  • Define and report on key Data Quality KPIs, using correlation and trend analysis to provide platform-wide transparency.
  • Manage an enterprise data model, integrating multiple domains across relational and NoSQL technologies.
  • Architect and implement robust observability frameworks, creating real-time monitors, alerts, and dashboards that track the health and lineage of the data ecosystem.

What We Are Looking For

  • Technical proficiency in the modern data engineering stack, specifically DBT, SQL, and Python.
  • Proven track record of leading or mentoring a small team of engineers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools, such as Elementary and Grafana.
  • Proficiency in leveraging AI coding assistants, such as Cursor, Claude, and Copilot, to enhance team velocity.
  • Strong background in healthcare and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data.
  • Analytical powerhouse, with the ability to use data profiling and correlation analysis to solve complex data integrity problems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate technical data quality gaps into actionable insights for both internal developers and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems, such as Git.
