About the Role

As a Staff Backend Engineer at GitLab, you will play a central role in shaping and scaling the core infrastructure behind GitLab CI. Your primary focus will be on integrating AI into CI/CD workflows, working closely with Engineering, Product, and UX leadership to drive innovation and efficiency. You will be part of a high-performance team that values continuous knowledge exchange, enabling you to reach your full potential while collaborating with industry leaders to solve complex problems.

The role entails working on the Verify stage, where you will help define how AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences are designed, built, and iterated upon. You will set standards for success across the AI agent portfolio, including measuring success, instrumenting behavior in production, and accounting for large language model limitations. Your work will have a significant impact on performance, reliability, and usability for millions of CI jobs, from small teams to large enterprises.

What You Will Do

  • Partner with Engineering, Product, and UX leadership to pressure-test priorities and drive innovation
  • Define what success looks like across the AI agent portfolio and track progress
  • Bring a sharp eye to the competitive landscape, understanding what it takes to keep GitLab CI best-in-class
  • Help integrate GitLab's Duo Agent Platform into CI workflows at scale
  • Collaborate with the Engineering team to learn and grow together
  • Set standards for AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences
  • Instrument behavior in production and measure success
  • Account for large language model limitations
  • Work on Agentic CI projects, such as AI Pipeline Builder and Fix a Failing Pipeline flow
