About the Role

The Staff Backend Product Software Engineer will play a pivotal role in shaping Dropbox's mission to build a more enlightened way of working. This involves translating large, ambiguous problem spaces into clear technical roadmaps, leading delivery for cross-functional teams, and collaborating on ideas that shape area-level decisions. The role requires effective communication at all levels, integrating evolving business context into product and platform direction, and setting high standards for engineering and operational excellence.

As a key member of the Core Engineering team, the Staff Backend Product Software Engineer will own large projects, such as optimizing activation and engagement flows for team users. This multi-year plan aims to modernize onboarding and activation, clean up core Dropbox surfaces, and build intelligent, adaptive systems that boost team activation, invites, and long-term engagement across platforms.

What You Will Do

  • Own large, ambiguous problem spaces directly tied to company metrics and translate them into clear six-month technical roadmaps
  • Lead delivery for 15-20 engineers across team boundaries, ensuring collaboration and effective communication
  • Collaborate on ideas that shape area-level decisions, communicating effectively at all levels
  • Continuously integrate evolving business context into product and platform direction
  • Set and model high standards for engineering and operational excellence, driving reliability, scalability, execution rigor, and long-term maintainability
  • Remain deeply hands-on through daily coding, design authorship, critical reviews, and architectural leadership
  • Influence Core Engineering roadmaps, establish technical direction, and bring strong instincts for high-quality consumer-facing experiences
  • Mentor senior talent, raising the technical bar through coaching and example
  • Extend impact through org-level technical leadership, optimizing for the company as a whole

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven experience as a backend software engineer, with expertise in designing and developing scalable systems
  • Strong coding skills in languages such as Java, Python, or C++
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies, such as AWS or Google Cloud
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools, such as Excel
  • A strong passion for delivering high-quality consumer-facing experiences
  • Experience in driving reliability, scalability, and long-term maintainability of systems
