About the Role
As a Staff Designer at Mozilla, you will be instrumental in shaping the user experience across our range of products, including desktop, web, and mobile applications. Your expertise will help define the direction of our design initiatives, ensuring that our products are not only aesthetically pleasing but also intuitive, accessible, and aligned with our core values of privacy and productivity. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering and product leadership, to identify system-wide opportunities for improvement and drive the development of scalable, user-centered design solutions.Mozilla is a small but growing team of over 50 people, distributed across seven countries, and as such, this role is fully remote, allowing you to work from anywhere in the UK. Our unique approach to product development is centered around transparency, inclusivity, and a commitment to open-source principles, ensuring that our products are both powerful and respectful of user data.
What You Will Do
- Lead complex, cross-team design initiatives from problem framing and discovery through to shipped outcomes, ensuring that design solutions are cohesive, accessible, and meet user needs.
- Map end-to-end user journeys to identify system-level gaps and define scalable experience solutions that can be applied across our range of products.
- Produce high-quality design artifacts, including flows, wireframes, prototypes, and documentation, to create alignment and enable confident implementation by engineering teams.
- Shape experience frameworks, visual systems, and design standards that scale across platforms and teams, ensuring consistency and excellence in design output.
- Translate research, analytics, and business context into clear recommendations, actionable plans, and long-term experience strategy, driving continuous improvement and innovation in design.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure that design solutions are technically feasible and align with our open-source principles.
- Mentor junior designers and provide guidance on design best practices, contributing to the elevation of design craft across the organization.
- Participate in design critiques and contribute to the development of our design culture, fostering an environment of open feedback, continuous learning, and growth.
What We Are Looking For
- A strong portfolio that demonstrates your ability to craft intuitive, user-centered design solutions across multiple platforms.
- Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and Excel for data analysis and visualization.
- Experience in leading cross-functional design initiatives and collaborating with engineering and product teams to drive design solutions from concept to delivery.
- Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A deep understanding of user experience principles, human-centered design, and the ability to apply these principles in the development of complex digital products.
- Experience working in an open-source environment or a strong appreciation for open-source principles and their application in product development.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting while maintaining strong collaboration and communication with distributed teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience with front-end development principles and technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, to inform design decisions and improve collaboration with engineering teams.
- Knowledge of accessibility guidelines and principles, and how to incorporate these into design solutions to ensure inclusivity and usability for all users.
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git, to facilitate efficient collaboration and iteration on design projects.
