About the Role
The Staff Engineer position at OakNorth is a critical role that requires technical excellence and the ability to drive innovation in digital lending. As a key member of the team, you will work closely with product and engineering squads to ensure the right trade-offs are being made and dependencies are managed effectively. With a strong technical background and 8+ years of experience in designing and engineering large-scale systems, you will be responsible for leading squads to sensible architectural decisions and measuring success in terms of business impact.The digital lending space is rapidly evolving, and OakNorth is committed to staying at the forefront of innovation. What You Will Do
- Design and engineer large-scale systems that drive business growth
- Lead squads to sensible architectural decisions on complex technical problems
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure effective communication and dependency management
- Measure success in terms of business impact, not lines of code
- Internalize the best ideas from across the organization and set a vision that others can get behind

What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of experience in designing and engineering large-scale systems
- Strong technical background and expertise in Excel
- Experience with AI/LLM integrations and Generative AI applications
- Knowledge of intelligent document processing and NLP techniques
- Familiarity with vector databases and search platforms
- Exposure to agentic workflows or orchestration frameworks for multi-step AI reasoning
- Experience with Python, PostgreSQL, BigQuery, MySQL, TypeScript, React, and styled-components
- Strong understanding of DevOps culture and practices
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically
Nice to Have
- Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) and frameworks like Claude Code
- Familiarity with AWS, GCP, ECS Fargate, Docker, Terraform, and GitHub Actions
- Knowledge of Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, and pytest
- Experience with agile development methodologies and continuous deployment
