Staff Engineer, Identity

## About the Role As a Staff Engineer on Stripe's Identity team, you will own the technical direction of one of Stripe's most strategically important product areas. This role is not defined by task execution, but by technical judgment, architectural influence, and the ability to turn an ambitious vision into a reliable, scalable system. The Identity team is responsible for building a global, reusable identity store, which will enable Stripe to digitally verify users' identities for fraud prevention, regulatory compliance, and trust and safety purposes.

The Identity team is a critical part of Stripe's overall mission to increase the GDP of the internet. By building a robust and scalable identity verification system, the team will enable Stripe to provide a more secure and trustworthy experience for its users. As a Staff Engineer on this team, you will be responsible for driving the technical strategy and direction of the Identity team, and will have a significant impact on the company's overall success.

The role will involve collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and design. You will be responsible for driving technical decisions and ensuring that the Identity team is building a system that meets the needs of Stripe's users. You will also be responsible for mentoring and guiding other engineers on the team, and for helping to drive the overall technical direction of the company.

## What You Will Do - Own technical strategy for the Identity team, including defining the architecture for Identity's core systems and making build-vs-buy-vs-partner decisions - Lead platform development, including architecting net-new systems such as the Identity Store, Networked Identity platform, and advanced fraud detection pipeline - Drive cross-functional alignment, including partnering with ML, product, legal, and engineering leads across Risk, Fraud, Link, Connect, and Crypto to ensure Identity's abstractions serve the full breadth of Stripe's product surface - Raise the technical bar, including setting engineering standards across ML, backend, mobile, and front-end, leading design reviews, and mentoring senior engineers on the judgment needed to operate a high-stakes, externally-facing product - Operate with ownership, including being accountable for reliability, scalability, and security of the systems you design, including the observability and alerting that catch model drift and fraud pattern shifts before customers do - Collaborate with the product team to define the product roadmap and ensure that the Identity team is building a system that meets the needs of Stripe's users - Work closely with the engineering team to ensure that the Identity team is building a system that is scalable, reliable, and secure - Partner with the design team to ensure that the Identity team is building a system that provides a seamless and intuitive user experience - Participate in the hiring process for the Identity team, including interviewing candidates and providing feedback on the hiring process

## What We Are Looking For - 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on building scalable and reliable systems - Experience with identity verification and fraud prevention systems - Strong technical judgment and architectural influence - Ability to drive cross-functional alignment and technical strategy - Experience with cloud-based systems and microservices architecture - Strong understanding of security and compliance principles - Experience with machine learning and data science - Strong communication and collaboration skills - Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems

## Nice to Have - Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes - Experience with cloud-based identity and access management systems - Experience with DevOps and continuous integration/continuous deployment - Experience with data analytics and visualization tools - Experience with security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 and GDPR
