About the Role

The Staff Product Designer position at Gusto is a unique opportunity to drive design strategy and execution across the contractors experience. As a key member of the design team, you will be responsible for leading the development of intuitive, scalable experiences that support a variety of customer workflows. You will work closely with cross-functional partners in Product, Engineering, Research, Data, and Marketing to design, build, and ship experiences that make a real difference. The role is part of a larger effort to build an AI-native design organization, and you will be expected to leverage AI tools to prototype ideas quickly, shorten customer feedback loops, and ship quality UX directly to customers.

The contractors experience is a critical part of Gusto's platform, and the company is looking for a designer who can help bring it to maturity. You will be the IC design leader across this area, driving foundational shifts to the platform and customer experiences. This is a unique opportunity to make major experience changes to established, business-critical workflows.

What You Will Do

  • Drive end-to-end design strategy and execution across the contractors experience from discovery and visioning through iterative delivery and refinement
  • Partner with product, engineering, research, data, legal, compliance, operations, and support to define problem spaces, align on priorities, and deliver solutions that meet both customer and business needs
  • Translate insights from research and data into intuitive, scalable experiences that support a variety of customer workflows
  • Champion thoughtful, inclusive design practices that reflect the company's values and mission
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to design, build, and ship experiences that make a real difference
  • Leverage AI tools to prototype ideas quickly, shorten customer feedback loops, and ship quality UX directly to customers
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the company's products, services, and customer needs
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in design
  • Participate in design critiques, providing feedback and guidance to other designers
  • Collaborate with the design team to develop and maintain a consistent design language

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in product design, with a focus on user experience and interaction design
  • Portfolio that demonstrates your ability to drive design strategy and execution
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and marketing
  • Strong understanding of design principles, human-centered design, and user experience best practices
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Experience with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with AI-driven design tools and technologies
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies
  • Experience with front-end development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of accessibility principles and best practices
