About the Role
The Staff Product Designer role at The New York Times is a unique opportunity to combine product design, strategy, and editorial expertise to create innovative AI-powered experiences for users. As a key member of the New A.I. Products and Platforms (NAPP) team, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to integrate AI into products and features. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include imagining concepts for new AI-powered experiences, using quantitative data and qualitative research to inform design decisions, and creating clear prototypes to validate desirability, feasibility, and usability.The NAPP team is a critical part of The New York Times's efforts to build the next generation of AI-powered products, and as a Staff Product Designer, you will play a leadership role in shaping the team's strategy and direction. You will report to the Deputy Head of Product Design and work closely with engineering teams in an Agile development environment.

What You Will Do
- Collaborate with product teams across The New York Times to identify opportunities to integrate AI into products and features
- Imagine concepts for delivering new AI-powered experiences for users
- Use quantitative data and qualitative research to inform design decisions
- Create clear prototypes of concepts to validate desirability, feasibility, and usability
- Lead conversations and set direction with NAPP's leadership team and influence the broader AI strategy
- Represent your work to leadership within the company
- Work with engineering teams in an Agile development environment
- Champion AI innovation and ethics, staying up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies
- Own evaluation for quality and editorial integrity, creating frameworks to assess the success of AI prototypes and products
What We Are Looking For
- 7+ years of experience as a product manager or product designer, with recent experience creating coded prototypes using AI-enabled tools and workflows
- 7+ years of experience collaborating with editorial or product teams to deliver experiences that users love and return to
- Case studies or portfolio of shipped work demonstrating experience working in 0-to-1 environments where requirements change often
- Experience designing user experiences that use AI/LLM
- Experience refining AI's tone, format, and behavior to align with brand guidelines and product quality benchmarks
- Strong understanding of journalistic independence and a commitment to The New York Times's mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and version control systems
- Experience with data analysis and visualization tools
- Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and natural language processing
- Certification in product design or a related field
