About the Role
The Staff Product Engineer role at LawnStarter represents a pivotal position in the company's mission to redefine the home services industry. As a staff engineer, you will be embedded within an initiative team, working closely with a Product Manager and a designer to drive key outcomes. This is not a traditional engineering role; instead, you will be leading AI agents to implement and ship code, ensuring the highest quality, safety, and velocity. Your work will have a direct impact on the company's growth and success, making this an exciting opportunity for engineers looking to own their outcomes.The role is part of a broader initiative to expand LawnStarter's services beyond lawn care, creating a one-stop shop for all home services. This expansion is built on a single shared platform, operating across three brands: LawnStarter, Lawn Love, and Home Gnome. The engineering team is structured around initiative teams, each focusing on a specific goal and metric. As a Staff Product Engineer, you will be the engineering anchor of one initiative at a time, working with your PM and designer to shape the problem, decide on the technical approach, and lead the AI agents that implement most of the code.
What You Will Do
- Lead AI agents in implementing and shipping high-quality code for your initiative, ensuring safety, correctness, and performance.
- Collaborate with your PM and designer to shape the problem, decide on the technical approach, and implement the solution.
- Own the technical approach for your initiative, including architecture, data model, integration choices, rollout plan, observability, and rollback strategy.
- Partner with your PM to present results and review the success of your initiative, focusing on moving specific metrics.
- Work closely with your designer to ensure UX decisions align with technical capabilities and agent-led implementation.
- Develop and maintain the agent workflow that enables one engineer to ship what used to require a team, focusing on prompts, evals, tests, and observability.
- Ensure the integration of AI agents into the development process, enhancing the quality and velocity of code production.
- Participate in weekly check-ins with your Engineering Manager to discuss initiative health, blockers, and growth opportunities.
- Contribute to the review loop that evaluates the performance and outcome of your initiative, suggesting improvements and adjustments as needed.
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on digital skills and remote work.
- Strong background in leading AI agents or working with automated coding tools.
- Experience with cross-functional partnership, especially with product managers and designers.
- Ability to own an outcome without a tech lead, making decisions and documenting them.
- Strong understanding of initiative metrics and how to drive them through technical decisions.
- Experience with coding languages relevant to the project, with the ability to learn and adapt quickly.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to frame problems and lead agents to solve them.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical ideas and results to various stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Experience with on-demand marketplaces or home services industries.
- Knowledge of Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or other AI coding tools.
- Background in data model design and integration choices for complex systems.
