About the Role

The Staff Software Engineer position at Reddit is a pivotal role within the Community Builders organization, aimed at empowering anyone to create and steer a thriving community. This team exists to make community building intuitive, sustainable, and rewarding, which is central to Reddit's long-term success. As a key member of the Engagement team, you will contribute to cultivating Reddit's community growth by helping new communities find their audience and build momentum. Your expertise will be crucial in connecting users with content and conversations that matter to them, regardless of the topic's niche nature.

About the Team

The Engagement team is dedicated to fostering community growth through innovative strategies and technologies. The team's north star is centered around creating thriving communities where moderators are engaged, members keep returning, and content compounds on itself. To achieve this, the team uses data, ML-powered signals, and product experimentation to identify and remove barriers to sustainable growth.

What You Will Do

  • Define and accelerate the backend architecture for the team's core growth levers, including systems for community discovery and member participation.
  • Partner with the Engineering Manager to cultivate a growth engineering mindset within the team, emphasizing experimentation, iteration, and learning.
  • Scale impact through collaborative engineering, maintaining deep partnerships with engineering teams whose work directly influences community growth.
  • Develop and implement data-driven solutions to drive community engagement and growth, leveraging Reddit's vast user insights and data resources.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and effective implementation of community growth strategies.
  • Participate in code reviews, ensuring high-quality code and adherence to engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with product teams to design and implement features that support community growth and engagement.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, contributing to their growth and development.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends in software engineering, applying this knowledge to continuously improve Reddit's community growth capabilities.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong background in software engineering with a focus on backend development and architecture.
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation, particularly in the context of community growth and engagement.
