Job Description
About the Role
The Staff Software Engineer role at Trase Systems is pivotal in defining the core execution model and platform architecture of Trase OS, the company's agentic operating system. This role is not just about coding; it's about setting the technical direction for the platform, ensuring it behaves flawlessly under real-world conditions, including failure, scale, and security constraints. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own the system's abstractions and APIs, connecting workflows, agents, tools, and product surfaces. Your work will have a multiplier effect across all engineering teams, making this a company-critical role.Trase OS is designed to operate in regulated environments where auditability and reliability are paramount. The system coordinates long-lived workflows, agents, and tools across multiple services and environments, making the primary risks shift from implementation to system design quality. The role exists to mitigate these risks by defining clean, durable abstractions for the platform execution model, ensuring correctness and determinism in workflow execution, and translating evolving product requirements into coherent platform architecture.
What You Will Do
- Develop the core execution model, including state machines, lifecycles, resource models, and failure semantics.
- Design platform APIs and SDKs connecting workflows, agents, tools, and product surfaces, and drive versioning and compatibility.
- Guarantee correctness via idempotency, deterministic replays, compensating actions, and data integrity.
- Engineer reliability at scale, focusing on concurrency controls, rate limits, backpressure, sharding/partitioning, and workload isolation.
- Build security and governance into the core, including RBAC/ABAC, policy enforcement, fine-grained audit, and lineage.
- Deliver observability through distributed tracing, structured logs, metrics, and evaluation hooks, building an 'explainable trail' of agent actions.
- Own quality, including design reviews, test strategy, performance baselines, SLOs, incident response, and postmortems.
- Mentor and unblock senior engineers, partnering with Product, Security, and Customer teams to translate requirements into durable primitives.
- Make pragmatic choices on storage, queueing, and compute.
What We Are Looking For
- Proven experience in software engineering, with a focus on platform architecture and execution models.
- Strong understanding of system design principles, including scalability, reliability, and security.
- Experience with APIs, SDKs, and versioning.
- Knowledge of idempotency, deterministic replays, and compensating actions.
- Experience with concurrency controls, rate limits, and workload isolation.
- Understanding of security and governance principles, including RBAC/ABAC and policy enforcement.
- Experience with observability tools and practices.
- Strong coding skills in relevant languages.
- Experience with agile development methodologies.
Nice to Have
- Experience working in regulated environments.
- Knowledge of AI and machine learning principles.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.
- Experience with mentoring and leading teams.
Benefits and Perks
- Competitive compensation package.
- Equity opportunities.
- Comprehensive health insurance.
- Flexible PTO policy.
- Remote work stipend.
- Professional development opportunities.
- Access to cutting-edge technologies and tools.
- Collaboration with a talented team of engineers and experts in AI and machine learning.
How to Stand Out
- Ensure your resume and cover letter highlight experience with platform architecture, system design, and execution models.
- Be prepared to discuss your approach to scalability, reliability, and security in system design.
- Show a deep understanding of APIs, SDKs, and versioning, and how you've applied these in previous roles.
- Prepare examples of how you've ensured correctness and determinism in workflow execution.
- Highlight any experience working in regulated environments and with AI or machine learning principles.
- Demonstrate your ability to mentor and lead teams, and your experience with agile development methodologies.
