About the Role
The Staff Systems Engineer position at Home Depot is a critical role that involves leading a team of engineers in designing, building, and supporting the company's technical infrastructure. This includes managing the reliability, performance, and security of Home Depot's enterprise z/OS mainframe environment. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the mainframe systems, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing solutions to optimize performance.The role requires a broad range of technical skills, including expertise in z/OS mainframe environments, Parallel Sysplex, scheduling and automation, networking, security, and diagnostics. As a leader, you will be expected to cross-train the team to reduce single-point-of-failure risk and contribute to the development of foundational infrastructure as code elements.
Home Depot's technical team is dynamic and collaborative, with engineers of all experience levels working together to build and grow technical and leadership skills. As a Staff Systems Engineer, you will be part of this team, creating, deploying, and supporting production infrastructure, and participating in the selection and implementation of physical and virtual infrastructure to meet evolving enterprise and product team needs.
What You Will Do
- Lead the configuration, debugging, and support of information technology solutions
- Develop and optimize specifications for technology solutions
- Produce and manage purchase requests for hardware and software
- Lead the development of test suites to enable successful rapid deployment of infrastructure as code to production
- Research and analyze business trends and behavioral data to identify strategic opportunities for improvements and new initiatives
- Collaborate with product and project teams to understand needs and enable them with infrastructure
- Support technology architecture design review efforts for project and product teams
- Leverage tooling and custom applications to monitor the operational status of applications, infrastructure, networks, databases, and security
- Drive root cause analysis, debugging, support, and post-mortem analysis for security incidents and service interruptions
- Maintain, upgrade, and support existing systems and infrastructure to ensure optimal performance
- Participate in strategic project planning and management across multiple efforts
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in z/OS mainframe environments
- Expertise in Parallel Sysplex, scheduling and automation, networking, security, and diagnostics
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills
- Experience with infrastructure as code elements and architectural diagrams
- Knowledge of modern systems engineering core practices
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Experience with test suite development and deployment
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies
