About the Role

The STAGES Sign Language Interpreter-Contractor plays a vital role in ensuring that students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH) have equal access to educational content and opportunities. As a member of a virtual academic team, you will work closely with teachers, staff, and caregivers to provide interpreting and transliterating services that meet the individual needs of each student. The role entails working in a virtual environment, interpreting and transliterating academic content, and collaborating with other team members to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed. You will be working with students who have varying levels of hearing loss, and your ability to adapt your communication style to meet their individual needs will be essential. As a contractor, you will be working independently from your home office, and your self-motivation, dependability, and strong organizational skills will be crucial to your success.

What You Will Do

  • Interpret and transliterate academic content for D/HH students in a virtual classroom setting
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, and caregivers to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs)
  • Provide expressive and voice interpretation of classroom instruction, clarify curricular content, and support work completion
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, caregivers, and school staff
  • Attend IEP meetings and serve as an integral member of the IEP team
  • Interpret for school activities outside of the virtual classroom, including extracurricular activities and meetings with caregivers
  • Adapt language and materials to meet the individual needs of students with hearing loss
  • Serve as a liaison between students who are D/HH, hearing peers, staff, community members, and/or caregivers
  • Be available to students, caregivers, and staff during designated work hours
  • Work from a professional home office environment, conducive to video and audio needs and a structured schedule

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum 1 year of experience interpreting in an educational environment
  • Minimum 1 year of experience providing interpreting services virtually
  • National Interpreter Certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or state-specific educational interpreter licensure
  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
  • Ability to work independently, with availability during typical school hours of at least 20 hours per week
  • Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 as defined by the school and time zone
  • MS365 Proficient
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms

  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis with administrators

How to Stand Out
