About the Role

The State Government Affairs Lead will play a pivotal role in OpenAI's engagement with state and local governments across the Northeast Region. This position will involve developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including elected officials, agency leaders, and local government representatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping regional strategies that advance OpenAI's policy goals and mission.

As a member of the Global Affairs team, the State Government Affairs Lead will collaborate with colleagues to inform and support the development of AI policies. This role will require a deep understanding of the complex policy landscape surrounding AI and the ability to navigate the intricacies of government affairs.

The State Government Affairs Lead will report to the Head of U.S. State Policy and Partnerships and will be part of a team that is driving policy initiatives that impact the future of AI.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials, agency leaders, and local government representatives across the Northeast Region
  • Serve as a primary representative of OpenAI's policy interests in the Northeast
  • Shape strategic initiatives and policy documents that advance OpenAI's policy goals and mission
  • Prepare OpenAI leaders for engagements with government officials
  • Represent OpenAI in private and public forums across the region
  • Collaborate with civil society and industry partners to advance policy initiatives
  • Advise internal teams on state and local-level opportunities, risks, and policy developments
  • Analyze and track policy developments and trends in the Northeast Region
  • Develop and execute thoughtful engagement strategies across the Northeast
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering and research teams

What We Are Looking For

  • Significant state government advocacy experience
  • Experience managing private sector and civil society relationships
  • Sophisticated understanding of AI-related legislative and regulatory issues and processes
  • Technical knowledge related to generative AI models
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to lead complex campaigns and initiatives across multiple stakeholders
  • Passion for responsible AI adoption and its intersection with economic growth, energy systems, and infrastructure development
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, especially engineering and research teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
