About the Role
Speechify is seeking a seasoned Tech Lead, Android to spearhead the development and growth of its Android app, a critical component of its text-to-speech product suite. As a key member of the engineering team, the successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the future of the Android app, collaborating closely with the design team, and driving the delivery of high-quality features. The Android app is the most used text-to-speech app in the Play Store, and its continued growth and success are crucial to Speechify's overall strategy. As such, the Tech Lead, Android will play a pivotal role in driving the app's development, ensuring its reliability, and identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement.
What You Will Do
- Own major features and work closely with the design team to deliver high-quality features that delight users
- Shape the future of the Android team and participate in discussions across different teams, including product, design, and engineering
- Review pull requests, support other teammates, and handle critical issues or unexpected challenges
- Take ownership of feature releases and provide nightly builds for the QA team
- Collaborate with the product team to define and prioritize the Android app's roadmap
- Develop and maintain reliability metrics for key features and identify areas for improvement
- Stay up-to-date with the latest Android trends, technologies, and best practices, and apply this knowledge to drive the app's development
- Participate in the interview process for new team members and contribute to the growth and development of the engineering team
- Communicate technical plans, progress, and results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on Android app development
- Familiarity with Android components, including Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, and MVVM
- Experience building or contributing to at least one Android app, with a strong understanding of product design intuition and user empathy
- Drive to push the boundaries of Android UI/UX and a passion for delivering high-quality user experiences
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical plans and results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a user-oriented approach to resolving issues and improving the app
- Experience with tests and how to approach writing tests, with a solid understanding of the importance of testing in software development
Nice to Have
- Experience building, maintaining, or contributing to open-source projects in Android
- Familiarity with iOS, Web, or NodeJS technologies
- Experience with other programming languages, such as Java or C++
