Job Description

About the Role

The Technical Claims Specialist plays a critical role in investigating, evaluating, and resolving environmental and emerging risk general liability and business auto claims of moderate to high exposure. This position requires working under limited supervision, using established practices and procedures to determine coverage, establish liability, and verify damages. As a key member of the claims team, the Technical Claims Specialist will collaborate closely with defense counsel, unit managers, and other stakeholders to resolve claims efficiently and effectively.

The day-to-day responsibilities of this role are varied and challenging, involving complex claims analysis, coverage position letters, and reserve recommendations. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of general liability and business auto claims handling techniques, as well as excellent writing and communication skills. The Technical Claims Specialist will report to a Unit Manager and work closely with other claims professionals, including senior claims handlers and defense counsel. This role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in a specialized area of claims handling, with ongoing training and support to ensure success.

What You Will Do

  • Investigate claims to determine coverage, including analysis of policy provisions and drafting comprehensive coverage position letters
  • Establish liability and verify damages, working closely with defense counsel and other stakeholders
  • Resolve claims within authority, making recommendations regarding case value and resolution strategy to the Unit Manager
  • Manage litigated files according to established litigation management protocols
  • Identify and handle suspicious claims, as well as claims with third-party subrogation potential
  • Establish and maintain accurate reserves on all assigned files, making timely reserve recommendations to the Unit Manager
  • Prepare for and attend mediation sessions and/or settlement conferences, negotiating on behalf of Liberty Mutual and its insureds
  • Monitor trials and report daily to the Unit Manager, making recommendations regarding strategy based on developments
  • Confer directly with policyholders on coverage and resolution strategy issues
  • Establish and update Action Plans on assigned claims, reflecting file status and disposition strategy
  • Provide support for senior and upper-level claim handlers on special projects and data organization

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent business experience
  • 4-5 years of related claims experience, with a solid understanding of general liability and business auto claims handling techniques
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise coverage position letters and authority memos
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with defense counsel, unit managers, and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of Liberty Mutual's claims procedures and protocols
  • Experience with claims management software and other digital tools
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and files
