About the Role
The Technical Deployment Lead position at OpenAI represents a unique opportunity to define how complex systems are delivered to customers. As a founding member of the Forward Deployed Engineering team, the successful candidate will own the technical delivery plan, embedding with customers to map workflows and success criteria. This role is about translating business objectives into a roadmap with milestones, dependencies, and acceptance criteria, and then executing that plan.The Forward Deployed Engineering team operates at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development, requiring the Technical Deployment Lead to partner with customer teams, researchers, and engineers to ensure delivery supports customer goals. This is not a management role, but rather a technical leadership position that demands deep expertise in technical project management and the ability to drive delivery end-to-end.
In this high-trust, high-autonomy role, the Technical Deployment Lead will have the freedom to make decisions, manage dependencies, and drive 0→1 prototypes through MVP and scale. Success will be measured by the impact of deployments on customer goals, delivery reliability, operating leverage, judgment under pressure, and product impact.
What You Will Do
- Own the technical delivery plan for multiple interdependent workstreams, translating business objectives into a roadmap.
- Run day-to-day engineering execution, tracking progress and driving delivery across OpenAI and customer teams.
- Embed with customer teams to land production deployments and drive adoption, mapping workflows and shaping tools and integrations.
- Partner with Product and Research to ensure platform components and research workstreams support deployment goals.
- Codify solution patterns and evaluations, extracting reusable patterns and packaging field signals to improve product and models.
- Own value cases and ROI, setting impact hypotheses, baselines, and KPIs, and running pre- and post-deployment measurements.
- Lead onboarding, adoption, and change management for customers.
- Track progress, manage dependencies, and make sequencing decisions to protect the critical path.
What We Are Looking For
- 7+ years of customer-facing technical delivery leadership experience.
- A track record of successfully leading large, complex, high-stakes customer engagements with tight coordination and fast decision-making.
- Ability to excel in high ambiguity environments and simplify complex and dynamic work.
- Strong technical fluency and sharp sequencing instincts, with confidence in discussing technical details and making trade-offs.
- Experience in shipping AI/LLM systems, understanding solution patterns, integration basics, and production pitfalls.
- Strategic thinking and pattern-matching skills, able to step back from execution detail and connect customer needs to scalable solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to move fluidly between system-level understanding and execution-level detail.
