Job Description

About the Role

Nabu Casa, the organization behind Home Assistant, is seeking a Technical Writer to own the documentation experience for their hardware and cloud products. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for creating high-quality documentation that empowers users to succeed independently. You will work closely with engineers to translate technical complexity into clear, concise content that meets the needs of a global community of users and developers.

The role entails developing and maintaining documentation for Nabu Casa's products, including setup guides, API guides, and integration documentation. You will also be responsible for auditing and improving existing documentation, defining documentation standards, and contributing to the developer experience. Your work will have a direct impact on the user experience, and you will be expected to prioritize tasks based on user feedback and support tickets.

You will report to the VP Commercial and work closely with the engineering team to ensure that documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and discoverable.

What You Will Do

  • Own the end-to-end documentation experience for Nabu Casa hardware and cloud products
  • Plan and deliver documentation for new features, integrations, and releases in sync with the product shipping cycle
  • Work directly with engineers to research and verify technical content
  • Audit and improve existing documentation continuously
  • Define and maintain documentation standards, style guides, and templates
  • Triage and act on documentation feedback from the community, support, and internal teams
  • Contribute to the developer experience, including API guides and contributor docs
  • Track documentation quality signals, such as support ticket themes and community feedback, and report on them regularly

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong technical writing skills, with a portfolio of developer or product documentation
  • Ability to read and understand code, including Python, YAML, and REST APIs
  • Good understanding of smart home hardware and electronics, with the ability to troubleshoot basic issues independently
  • Experience with docs-as-code workflows, including Git, Markdown, and static site generators
  • High autonomy and self-direction, with the ability to identify what needs to be written without waiting to be told
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to get technical information out of busy engineers efficiently
  • Familiarity with Home Assistant or similar open-source or self-hosted software

  • Experience maintaining documentation for a community-driven project with external contributors
