About the Role
The Telecom Designer position at Olsson is a unique opportunity to work on the design of low-voltage, telecommunications, security, and audio/visual systems within complex data center environments. As a key member of the Data Center team, you will collaborate with experienced designers and engineers to deliver high-quality technical solutions for mission-critical facilities. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include using CAD/BIM tools to support cable routing, equipment layouts, and communications system design, as well as assisting with telecom, security, and A/V system layouts.The data center industry is rapidly evolving, with a growing need for skilled professionals who can design and implement complex systems. As a Telecom Designer at Olsson, you will be at the forefront of this evolution, working on projects that have a significant impact on the digital infrastructure of companies around the world. What You Will Do
- Use CAD/BIM tools to support cable routing, equipment layouts, and communications system design
- Assist with telecom, security, and A/V system layouts, including MDF/IDF/Demarc rooms and horizontal cabling design
- Contribute to project design tasks under the guidance of senior team members
- Support coordination efforts across disciplines to maintain accuracy and design consistency
- Participate in client discussions, reinforcing Olsson's commitment to quality and partnership
- Complete occasional site visits to support field verification and project progress
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that designs meet client requirements and industry standards
- Develop and maintain detailed documentation of design plans and specifications
- Stay up-to-date with industry developments and best practices in telecom system design
- Participate in internal training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge
- Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and design guidelines
What We Are Looking For
- Associate degree in Drafting/Design (preferred)
- 3+ years of CAD/BIM experience; Revit/AutoCAD proficiency is a plus
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Solid interpersonal and problem-solving abilities
- Experience with Cellular DAS, PSDAS, ROIP, or ERRCS (nice to have)
- Interest in developing stronger telecom design skills, including complex drawing layout and industry standards
- Interest in pursuing RCDD certification in the future
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in design work
- Familiarity with data center design principles and industry standards
Nice to Have
- Experience with data center design and operations
- Knowledge of industry-specific software and tools, such as data center infrastructure management (DCIM) systems
- Familiarity with IT and networking protocols, such as TCP/IP and DNS
- Experience with project management software and collaboration tools
- Certification in a related field, such as RCDD or CDCP
