Job Description

About the Role

The Underwriting Counsel role at Stewart is a critical position that requires a deep understanding of title insurance underwriting, risk analysis, and exceptional communication skills. As a key member of the underwriting team, you will be responsible for evaluating and approving title policy exceptions, endorsements, and coverage requests, as well as providing guidance to internal teams and customers. Your expertise will help drive accuracy, consistency, and timely closings, ensuring that Stewart maintains its reputation as a premier title and real estate services company.

In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including underwriting, operations, and sales, to identify and mitigate risk, improve processes, and develop innovative solutions to complex title issues. Your strong working knowledge of Texas real property concepts, common defects, curative practices, and insurability standards will enable you to analyze and approve title policy exceptions, endorsements, and coverage requests, as well as recommend solutions for complex title issues.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze and approve title policy exceptions, endorsements, and coverage requests
  • Recommend solutions for complex title issues
  • Identify risk trends and support process improvements to reduce claims exposure and increase consistency across files
  • Determine premiums, terms, and conditions based on established rules, rates, and guidelines
  • Perform a range of assignments and may lead projects within your discipline
  • Apply working knowledge of business and best practices gained through understanding of key business drivers and recognition of how your area integrates within the organization
  • Interpret title searches/exams, commitments, legal descriptions, recorded instruments, and related documentation
  • Solve moderately complex to complex problems and analyze possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents
  • Communicate decisions clearly and professionally to internal teams and customers
  • Act as a resource for colleagues and provide guidance to less experienced team members
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred
  • Typically requires 5+ years of related work experience in title insurance underwriting
  • Strong working knowledge of Texas real property concepts, common defects, curative practices, and insurability standards
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Ability to interpret title searches/exams, commitments, legal descriptions, recorded instruments, and related documentation
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze complex data
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
