About the Role

The VC Associate role at Toyota Research Institute is a unique opportunity to work with a leading venture capital firm that focuses on deep tech and climate solutions. As part of the investment team, you will be responsible for sourcing and evaluating innovative startups, working closely with the Investment Committee to identify high-potential companies. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include attending industry events, networking with entrepreneurs and investors, and conducting due diligence on potential investments.

The role is based in Los Altos Hills, California, but remote work within other U.S. cities is possible, offering flexibility and work-life balance. As a key member of the team, you will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to support portfolio companies and contribute to the growth of the firm.

What You Will Do

  • Network and take part in industry and VC events, organizations to stay informed about market trends and identify potential investment opportunities
  • Help generate deal-flow and source high-potential target companies in areas like AI, advanced materials, automation, and robotics
  • Meet with and evaluate companies to make recommendations on investing, utilizing your analytical skills to assess market potential and growth prospects
  • Participate in due diligence, competitive analyses, and industry deep dives to inform investment decisions
  • Prepare memos and present potential investments to the Investment Committee, clearly articulating the investment thesis and potential returns
  • Support deal negotiations and closings, ensuring that all parties are aligned and that transactions are completed efficiently
  • Analyze latest industry trends and author market research briefings to inform investment strategies and portfolio company support
  • Collaborate with Toyota Ventures platform team to support portfolio companies, providing guidance and resources to help them scale and grow
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, engineering, or a relevant field, with a strong academic record and a demonstrated interest in deep tech and venture capital
  • 4+ years of work experience in a related role, preferably in venture capital or an operational role in a technology company, with a track record of success and a deep understanding of the startup ecosystem
  • High level of integrity and professionalism, with the ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Entrepreneurial-minded and well-networked, with a strong ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas and negotiate effectively
  • Strong financial modeling and analysis skills, with extensive experience working with Excel and Google Suite
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and risk, with a willingness to take calculated risks and adapt to changing market conditions

Nice to Have

  • Experience creating cap tables, digesting financial statements, and preparing investment memos, with a strong understanding of financial analysis and modeling
  • Hands-on experience in a development or product management role related to one of our investment areas, with a deep understanding of the technical and market dynamics
  • Familiarity with the startup ecosystem, with a strong network of contacts and a deep understanding of the key players and trends
  • Experience working with venture capital firms or startup companies, with a strong understanding of the investment process and the challenges faced by early-stage companies
