Requirements
2-3 years experience as a newsletter director at a media company Exceptional editorial judgement Organized and deadline oriented Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach; the ability to build bridges across the organization Confidence and experience making data-informed editorial decisions. You need to be as comfortable with the numbers and analysis as you are with creating clear, clean, and lively copy. How to Stand Out
- Create a short, data‑driven portfolio (2‑3 slides) that walks through a real newsletter you’ve launched or revamped: show the initial open‑rate, the Excel model you built to segment audiences, the A/B test you ran, and the resulting KPI lift (e.g., +25% CTR, +15% revenue). Include screenshots of the Excel dashboards you used to track growth and monetization.
- In your cover letter and interview, mirror AFAR’s travel‑inspired tone: reference a recent AFAR feature or Suitcase story, explain how you’d translate that voice into headline copy and segmentation logic that deepens “loyalty and regular readership.”
- Prepare a 10‑minute case study on how you would grow the Suitcase newsletter audience in the UK: outline a content calendar, a segmentation strategy using Excel pivot tables, a partnership funnel with UK‑based travel brands, and the metrics you’d use to prove ROI to sales.
- Highlight cross‑functional collaboration by gathering one or two brief testimonials (or LinkedIn recommendations) from former sales or marketing partners who can speak to your ability to co‑create products, negotiate sponsorships, and deliver measurable revenue.
- Research remote salary benchmarks for senior newsletter leaders at travel media firms (e.g., $130‑$165 k base + performance bonus). Bring a concise one‑page “value proposition” to the negotiation that ties your proven revenue lifts and Excel‑based reporting to the range you’re targeting.
