- Showcase a live Excel payroll model: Build a one‑page workbook that pulls sample employee data (salary, hourly rate, overtime, deductions) and automatically calculates bi‑weekly and semi‑monthly net pay, tax withholdings, and benefits contributions using formulas, data validation, and pivot tables. Include a brief video (2‑3 min) walking the interviewer through your model to demonstrate precision, Excel mastery, and the ability to create reusable tools for Automatiq’s lean HR team.
- Demonstrate equity‑program expertise: Prepare a concise one‑page case study of how you administered stock options or RSUs in a previous role (or a simulated scenario if you lack direct experience). Highlight steps you took to ensure compliance (e.g., 409A valuations, tax reporting), communication with employees, and integration with payroll. Reference specific platforms (Carta, Shareworks) and note any automation you built to sync grant data with payroll.
- Highlight remote compliance & audit readiness: In your resume and interview, list the exact payroll jurisdictions you’ve processed (e.g., CA, NY, TX) and the compliance checks you performed (state unemployment, ACA, local taxes). Bring a short “audit checklist” you’ve used (or created) that maps each payroll run to required filings and timelines—showing you can keep Automatiq’s payroll both accurate and audit‑ready while working fully remote.
- Prepare a collaborative scenario for finance/HR alignment: Draft a 5‑minute presentation describing a past project where you partnered with finance to reconcile payroll expenses with general ledger entries and with HR to update benefit elections during open enrollment. Emphasize communication tools you used (Slack, Asana, shared Google Sheets) and measurable outcomes (e.g., reduced reconciliation errors by 30%). This signals you can thrive in Automatiq’s “high‑ownership, high‑trust” environment.
- Negotiate with data‑driven market benchmarks: Before the offer stage, gather salary data for remote Payroll & Benefits Specialists at mid‑size tech firms (e.g., from Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, and Robert Half). Prepare a one‑pager that compares base pay, bonus potential, and equity components, and align it with Automatiq’s equity‑focused culture. When discussing compensation, cite the benchmark, your proven cost‑saving automation projects, and ask for a performance‑based bonus tied to payroll accuracy metrics.
