About the Role

What you Will Do

• Define and drive the multi-year product strategy and roadmap for Apache Flink across cloud and on-prem products.
• Establish structured processes to align product, engineering, GTM, and executive stakeholders.
• Identify high-leverage, 0-to-1 product opportunities for Flink and in adjacent areas like AI, data engineering, data warehousing, and event-driven applications.
• Define how Confluent Flink offerings will work across Confluent and IBM product portfolio.

• Deep technical expertise in distributed systems, data engineering, and cloud. Domain expertise in streaming technologies such as Kafka, Flink, or Spark is a plus but not required.
• Experience leading product development across the entire lifecycle, scaling businesses from early product-market fit to substantial revenue.
• 10+ years of experience in product management for a technical software or cloud service product.

• Experience with open-source software and determining commercialization strategy while building the community.
• Track record in data infrastructure, analytics, AI/ML platforms, real-time systems, or streaming systems, especially where the product serves customers with a diversity of technical depth.

• Highlight deep GTM expertise with concrete examples: prepare a one‑page case study of a product you launched that moved from “beta” to “enterprise adoption” within 12 months, quantifying ARR growth, pipeline creation, and cross‑functional alignment (engineering, sales, support). Include metrics on customer acquisition cost, churn reduction, and time‑to‑value—Confluent’s interviewers will expect data‑driven storytelling.
• Demonstrate Apache Flink fluency: build a short demo (5‑minute video or interactive notebook) showing how you’d design a new Flink‑based streaming feature for Confluent Cloud, covering user personas, pricing model, and go‑to‑market motion. Publish the demo on GitHub with a clear README; reference it in your résumé and bring it up during the product design interview.
• Prepare for “hard‑question” interviews: rehearse answering “What was the biggest trade‑off you made when prioritizing a streaming feature vs. operational reliability?” Use the STAR format and include the impact on latency, cost, and partner integration. Confluent values honest feedback, so be ready to discuss a past mistake and the corrective actions you led.
• Showcase remote leadership: compile a 2‑page “Remote Impact Portfolio” that lists the collaboration tools (Jira, Notion, Miro, Zoom) you’ve mastered, rituals you instituted (async OKRs, weekly alignment demos), and outcomes (e.g., reduced cycle time by 20 %). Cite at least one instance where you led a geographically dispersed team to ship a product milestone on schedule.
• Salary negotiation prep: research the latest Levels.fyi and Blind data for Principal PM roles at SaaS firms in the U.S. (base $180–210 k, target total comp $300–350 k). Frame your ask around market benchmarks, your proven Flink GTM successes, and the cost‑of‑living adjustments for remote work. Prepare a concise email template that outlines base, equity, and signing bonus expectations before the final offer call.
