VP, Legal & Privacy
Job Description
Who You Are
You are a pragmatic, business-minded attorney with 10–15 years of experience. You bring real range: strong commercial contracting and negotiation skills, genuine data privacy expertise, and enough litigation exposure that you know how to spot risk early, work confidently with outside counsel, and manage a matter from the inside even when you're not the one standing up in court.
You've likely spent time in a law firm as well as in-house, and you know how to translate legal risk into practical business guidance. You're comfortable managing outside counsel relationships on litigation, employment, and other matters, and you don't need a GC standing behind you to make sound judgment calls.
You're energized by ownership and by building a legal and privacy function from a senior individual seat, not by inheriting one that's already built. You're comfortable working fully remote with occasional travel.
What You Will Do
- Commercial Contracting: Draft, review, negotiate, and manage a wide range of commercial agreements, including customer, vendor, partnership, and SaaS contracts.
- Data Privacy & Protection (Privacy Officer-type duties): Own Minty's privacy and data protection program — including compliance with US and international privacy frameworks such as CCPA and GDPR, privacy impact assessments, data processing agreements, breach response planning, and acting as the internal point of contact for privacy and regulatory inquiries.
- Litigation Oversight & Outside Counsel Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for litigation and specialized legal matters, managing outside counsel relationships, budgets, and strategy.
- Cross-Functional & Executive Legal Support: Partner with the CEO, executive team, and teams across sales, marketing, product, and HR to provide practical legal guidance that supports business growth.
- Corporate & Governance Matters: Support corporate housekeeping and governance needs (e.g., board resolutions, entity matters) and general employment-related legal questions.
- Risk Management: Identify legal, privacy, and operational risks and provide clear, business-oriented recommendations to help the company move forward confidently.
- Process Improvement: Build scalable legal and privacy processes, templates, and workflows that improve efficiency across the organization.
- Strategic Support: Assist with corporate, operational, and strategic legal matters as the company continues to grow, reporting directly into executive leadership.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
- Active CIPP/US certification required, demonstrating foundational expertise in U.S. privacy law and regulation.
- 10–15 years of legal experience, ideally with a combination of law firm and in-house experience
- Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts
- Some litigation experience preferred — we are not requiring an ongoing active litigation practice, but demonstrated familiarity with litigation issues and processes.
- Demonstrated comfort managing and directing outside counsel on litigation or other specialized matters
- Experience with data privacy and protection frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA); privacy officer or privacy-program-ownership experience strongly preferred
- Experience advising executive leadership on legal, privacy, and operational risk
- Ability to operate as a company's lead legal resource, managing multiple projects and priorities independently
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

How to Stand Out
- Highlight your expertise with contract‑management platforms (e.g., Ironclad, DocuSign CLM, or ContractPodAi) in your resume and be ready to demo how you’ve built templates, tracked revisions, and automated approvals—Minty values a “tech‑savvy” counsel who can scale contract workflows quickly.
- Prepare a concise 2‑page portfolio that includes anonymized redlines and negotiation memoranda for SaaS, data‑processing, and partnership agreements; annotate each sample with the business outcome you achieved (e.g., reduced contract cycle time by 30% or secured $2 M in revenue). Bring this to the interview and reference it when discussing cross‑functional collaboration.
- In the interview, demonstrate “solution‑first” thinking by walking the panel through a real‑world scenario: a sales team needs to close a time‑sensitive deal while the product team raises privacy concerns. Outline the risk assessment, the key clauses you’d modify, and the stakeholder communication plan—Minty’s interviewers look for attorneys who can balance legal rigor with speed.
- Showcase familiarity with privacy frameworks that matter to Minty’s customers (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and emerging AI data‑use regulations). Mention any privacy impact assessments you’ve led and be prepared to discuss how you’d embed privacy by design into product launches and partnership contracts.
- When negotiating salary, research Minty’s typical remote‑first compensation bands (e.g., senior counsel ranges $170‑200 k base + equity). Frame your ask around the measurable value you’ll bring—e.g., “my experience cutting contract turnaround by 25 % will accelerate revenue growth, justifying a $20 k higher base plus a 0.15% equity grant.”
