Job Description
Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team
As Stripe continues to develop innovative products that serve businesses of all sizes around the world, risk will increase in complexity and scale. The User Risk Strategy org protects and advances our business, brand, and mission by building and deploying market-leading policies and practices that instill user and partner trust in Stripe while enabling business growth.
What you'll do
Under the User Risk Strategy org, you'll be part of the Ecosystem Risk Strategy Team, part of our "First Line of Defense" function within the Risk organization, driving the frameworks that dictate who Stripe does business with, on what terms, and how enforcement is executed at scale. The Ecosystem Risk Strategy Team focuses on our positioning and standards within the broader payments and risk ecosystem — including card network supportability, industry-body engagement, regulatory horizon scanning, and the overarching risk framework that governs our standards. Risk Strategists on the Ecosystem Risk Strategy Team work to make sure the User Risk Strategy team is properly calibrated to ensure we avoid (and take) the proper risks. We work with cross-functional partners to monitor and mitigate risk related to card network rules and BIN sponsor requirements. We interact with Risk Partnerships, Credit, Legal, Fraud, and other cross-functional teams to ensure our standards are properly calibrated.
We're looking for someone who is passionate about navigating ambiguity, engaging with internal and external stakeholders, enabling business growth while balancing risk, and identifying ways to improve user experience.
Responsibilities
- Drive risk strategy for company-level strategic initiatives, including partnering with our product, legal, operations, sales, and partnerships teams to solve risk problems and ensure a positive experience for our users
- Perform research and analysis to assess our current risk performance and develop and prioritize long-term strategic plans for future growth
- Enable user onboarding to safely grow at scale, continuously optimizing for efficiency and effectiveness, and staying hyper-focused on a positive user experience
- Challenge the status quo and provide multiple alternative solutions and key execution criteria
- Represent Stripe in external engagements with our most critical partners and customers
- Execute special projects and ad-hoc analyses as initiatives, products, risks, and opportunities are constantly evolving
Who you are
We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
- 8+ years of professional experience in financial services, payments, tech, law or policy
- Experience in a related role (risk, compliance, or product enablement)
- Experience in developing risk strategies and solutions and working with technical (product and engineering) and operations teams to implement them
- Ability to distill complex, ambiguous risk and policy problems into clear, concise, and reliable guidance for internal stakeholders and Stripe users
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including experience influencing product and engineering, sales, data science, and operations teams — with a proven ability to take complex issues and turn them into actionable next steps, hold others accountable, and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated track record of deriving insights from complex or technical problem spaces and evangelizing actionable product recommendations
- Familiarity with legal, credit, and fraud risk
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with data querying languages (e.g., SQL) and proficiency in quantitative analysis geared towards drawing actionable insights from complex datasets
- Advanced degree in law, business, policy, or international relations
- Experience in translating business requirements to technical configurations
- Experience in a client-facing role managing relationships with large, global, and complex organizations
How to Stand Out
- To stand out as a User Risk Strategist at Stripe, develop a deep understanding of the company's products and services, such as Stripe Radar and Stripe Payments, and be prepared to discuss how you would leverage these tools to mitigate user risk.
- Create a portfolio that showcases your experience with data analysis and visualization tools, such as Tableau or Power BI, and demonstrate how you've used these tools to identify and mitigate risk in previous roles.
- Familiarize yourself with programming languages such as Python or SQL, and be prepared to discuss how you would use these languages to analyze and visualize user risk data, as well as to automate risk-related tasks.
- Prepare to discuss your experience with machine learning models and algorithms, and how you would apply these to identify and mitigate user risk at Stripe, such as using supervised learning to detect fraudulent activity.
- Develop a strong understanding of the payments industry and the types of user risk that Stripe faces, such as money laundering or terrorist financing, and be prepared to discuss how you would develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks.
- Be prepared to negotiate salary based on industry standards for remote work, and research the company's approach to compensation and benefits for remote employees, such as Stripe's flexible work arrangement policy and comprehensive benefits package.
