AI training contract
Mechanical Design / CAD Expert
Engineering · Advertised USD 60-130 an hour. · 25 openings
Mechanical Design / CAD Expert is contract work for micro1, reviewing and correcting what AI models produce in engineering. The output of the job is expert judgement written down: a model gives an answer, someone who knows the subject decides whether it is right and explains why.
What it requires. No credential is stated on this listing beyond experience in the field.
What it pays. micro1 advertises USD 60 to USD 130 an hour. It also states that pay is output based, paid per task that meets the project specifications, so the hourly figure is an advertised equivalent and not a guaranteed wage.
Where. The listing says this role is remote and names no country. micro1 says it hires talent from around the world, except people who reside in Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russian Federation, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Yemen. So this page lists every other country as eligible, on the strength of that rule and not of anything this listing says. Requirements can still differ by role, so check the application page on micro1 before you apply.

Job Description Role Title: CAD / Mechanical Design Expert Role Type: Contractor Location: Remote micro1 is selecting CAD / Mechanical Design Experts to contribute to a customer's project focused on advancing the capabilities of AI technologies in mechanical design engineering. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required, your domain knowledge is what matters. This is an opportunity to impact the future of engineering by ensuring that AI systems can accurately interpret, solve, and explain complex mechanical design challenges spanning GD&T, tolerance stack-up, DFM, and drawing release. Experts with a passion for precision, technical detail, and clear written and verbal communication will find this engagement both rewarding and influential. Scope of Work Evaluate and solve advanced mechanical design and CAD problems spanning part/assembly design, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and DFM. Review and assess AI-generated technical responses for technical correctness, accuracy, and engineering quality. Apply practical engineering judgment to real-world production design scenarios and theoretical questions. Analyze and troubleshoot mechanical design problems using industry-standard techniques such as tolerance stack-up analysis, GD&T per ASME Y14.5, and design-for-manufacturability/assembly review. Contribute domain expertise to inform model improvements and refine AI reasoning in mechanical design and CAD. Document feedback and provide clear written and verbal explanations to enhance AI learning and performance. Collaborate remotely with a distributed team of experts and project participants. Preferred Qualifications MS or BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, or Industrial Design (CSWP/CSWE a plus). At least 5 years of experience in production design roles, having personally owned designs through GD&T, tolerance stacks, DFM, and drawing release. Expert knowledge of parametric CAD modeling, GD&T per ASME Y14.5, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design-for-manufacturability/assembly principles. Proven ability to take a design from concept through detail drawings, ECR/ECN, and production release. Familiarity with relevant standards bodies (ASME Y14.5, ASME B89 dimensional metrology) and manufacturing process constraints (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, casting). Professional English proficiency with exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Experience with CAD platforms (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor), PLM/PDM systems, or CAM/CNC programming is a plus. Strongly preferred — evidence of problem-authoring rigor, such as: service on an olympiad problem committee; a textbook problem-set or solutions-manual author credit; an item-writer role on an NCEES or academic qualifying-exam committee; service on an ASME Y14.5, ASME B89, or related dimensioning/tolerancing standards committee; a top placement or team-lead role in Formula SAE/Formula Student, ASME Student Design Competition/HPVC, MATE ROV, or a DARPA challenge; or an early-career fellowship/grant (NSF CAREER, DOE Early Career, Sloan Fellowship) or ASME Fellow recognition. Compensation Structure Compensation is output-based; experts are paid per task that meets the project specifications. The time required to complete work may vary depending on the expert’s experience and workflow. Minimum submission requirements apply. Experts must submit a minimum of tasks per week. Start Timeline & Availability We typically fill roles within 48 hours and are looking for experts ready to jump in right away. If selected, we expect you to start your first tasks within 24–48 hours of completing onboarding.
